Te Toi Aweawe: Arts Council

Te Toi Aweawe: Arts Council

Te Toi Aweawe is our student-led Arts Council, dedicated to fostering creativity, supporting artistic opportunities, and advocating for the arts across all disciplines: music, drama, dance, and visual arts.

Our Purpose

Te Toi Aweawe exists to empower and support students in their artistic pursuits. We believe that creativity should be nurtured, celebrated, and accessible to all. Our council works to strengthen the arts community within the school while ensuring students have the resources and opportunities to pursue their artistic goals.

What We Do

  • Fundraising & Financial Support—We hold fundraisers each year to help fund student trips, purchase equipment, and support new artistic ventures.

  • Event Organisation – We promote and help coordinate school arts events, including, productions, showcases, concerts, and exhibitions.

  • Student Advocacy – We provide a platform ensuring creative opportunities remain a priority at Otago Girls' High School.

  • Collaboration – We work alongside other leadership councils to enrich the school’s cultural life.

Student Leadership

Each year, a group of students is selected to lead Te Toi Aweawe along with our Arts Coordinators. These student leaders take on key roles in organising events, managing projects, and ensuring the arts remain a strong presence at Otago Girls’. Leadership positions provide a fantastic opportunity for students to develop teamwork, organisation, and advocacy skills while making a meaningful impact on the school’s creative life.

Get Involved

Students interested in joining Te Toi Aweawe can apply during the selection process held at the beginning of each year. Those chosen will take on leadership roles, working closely with staff and the wider school community to champion the arts. While council positions are selected annually, all students are encouraged to support arts initiatives, participate in events, and contribute to our creative projects throughout the year.

Parent & Community Support

We also welcome parent and whānau involvement in supporting the arts at Otago Girls’. Whether helping with fundraising, assisting at events, or sharing expertise, your support makes a real impact.
